Gentle Cure

What is Image-Guided SRT?

Image-Guided SRT (Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy) is a type of radiation used just for skin cancer. It kills skin cancer cells using low levels of X-ray energy. This energy is like what dentists use to X-ray teeth. It is given by a Radiation Therapist in a dermatologist’s office.

Image-Guided SRT is the first and only radiation treatment for skin cancer that uses ultrasound images. The ultrasound images let your dermatologist see the exact size of the cancer so he or she can target the area with the precise dose. These images also show the cancer shrinking and going away after each treatment.

Image-Guided SRT

Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) offers a non-invasive alternative to traditional surgery by using low amounts of X-ray energy to kill cancer cells, allowing healthy skin to regenerate naturally without creating wounds or scars. This method does not require anesthesia, making it a simpler and more comfortable option for patients. The treatment typically consists of 20 sessions, each lasting about 15 minutes, spread over several weeks. One of the significant advantages of Image-Guided SRT is that it does not cause bleeding or wounds, enabling patients to maintain their normal daily activities without interruption.

Additionally, there is no scarring associated with this treatment. Image-Guided SRT can treat multiple skin cancers simultaneously, which adds to its convenience. Utilizing ultrasound imaging technology, this method effectively finds, measures, and treats skin cancer cells while monitoring their reduction over time to ensure a complete cure. With a success rate of curing over 99% of basal and squamous cell skin cancers, Image-Guided SRT is a highly effective treatment option.

Mohs Surgery

Moh’s surgery is a process of excising the skin cancer and then the dermatologist marks the area and processes the pathology in their own office. The are able to map out the tumor reexcising if necessary, until all the cancer is removed. It is often necessary to perform more than one surgical session in a day to ensure all the cancerous cells are removed.

Post-surgery care includes managing the wounds by changing bandages, avoiding showers, and refraining from normal daily activities to allow proper healing. Scarring from the surgery is common and may require additional reconstructive surgery to address. Typically, Mohs surgery is focused on treating one skin cancer at a time. Despite these challenges, Mohs surgery boasts a high success rate, working effectively 96% to 98% of the time.
